In the life of the vineyard pruning is the single most important step in vineyard management
The past three weeks have provided excellent conditions for pruning. Pruning, which is the cutting back of dead and/or surplus wood and unnecessary plant growth, is the single most important act that affects the health and balance of the vine. The number of buds set is determined by the growing patterns of the past season. It is up to us to prune accordingly so that the vine is not stressed and produces a healthy harvest, pruning will also allow us to establish the vineyard’s crop potential.
To date we have completed pruning the following varieties; Vidal, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. We are just over 50% done.
This week we will start the next step in our vineyard - Tying the Vines.
